This course is designed so that teachers will become knowledgeable about the theory and practice of standards-based curriculum and assessment. It explores the teacher’s role in designing instruction that helps all children achieve to high standards. Participants become familiar with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, focusing particularly on student work that reflects proficiency in those standards. Using a backward design model, teachers develop units of study that enable all students to reach clearly defined academic targets. Teachers who complete this course successfully approach teaching with an expectation that they will ultimately be leaders in the field of curriculum.

K-12 / 67.5 PDPs / 3 Graduate Credits
This course is offered through the Collaborative’s educator licensure program and may be taken either as part of a Licensure Program or as an individual course for PDPs (individual course cost is $670). Graduate Credit through Fitchburg State University is available at additional cost; Master’s Degree and CAGS options are available.

Hybrid Online Format:

  • Classes: Online coursework Jun 30-Oct 2
  • Locations: 3 in-person sessions in Marlborough (Saturdays, 9:30am-12:30pm): Jun 30; Jul 21; Aug 18

Traditional Format:

  • Starts on June 25, 2012
  • Classes: Mon-Thurs (8:00am-1:00pm): Jun 25, 26, 27, 28; Jul 9, 10, 11, 12 (course ends Oct 2)
  • Locations: Northampton (June 25-28); Holyoke (July 9-12)

Late Fee

A $75 late fee will be applied for all registrations received after the date noted in each course description. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum class size will be set for each course. The Collaborative for Educational Services may choose to provide instruction to low enrollment courses through alternate means of course delivery.
