MTEL

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are designed to ensure that Massachusetts PreK-12 educators can communicate adequately with students, parents/guardians, and other educators and that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter of the license.

The test will continue to have two subtests (Reading and Writing) and the content will remain substantially the same. Key changes to the new test include:

    • The Reading subtest assesses knowledge of word meaning in context, and will no longer include short-answer word definitions.
    • The Writing subtest no longer includes short-answer grammatical term definitions.
    • The Writing subtest objectives for grammar, usage, spelling, capitalization and punctuation skills focus on common errors.
    • Topics for the open response summary exercise are related to education.

The new full-length Communication and Literacy Skills Practice Test is now available on Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website.

There are also commercially available test preparation books for Massachusetts MTELs.  Additional information about these books may be obtained online through the Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, or other websites.
